RURITAGE – Rural regeneration through systemic heritage-led strategies

European rural areas embody outstanding examples of Cultural and Natural Heritage (CNH) that need not only to be safeguarded, but also promoted as a driver for competitiveness, sustainable and inclusive growth and development. RURITAGE establishes a new heritage-led rural regeneration paradigm able to turn rural areas in sustainable development demonstration laboratories, through the enhancement of their unique CNH potential. RURITAGE has identified 6 Systemic Innovation Areas (pilgrimages; sustainable local food production; migration; art and festivals; resilience; and integrated landscape management) which, integrated with cross-cutting themes, showcase heritage potential as a powerful engine for economic, social and environmental development of rural areas. The knowledge built in 14 Role Models (RMs) and digested within the project, will be transferred to 6 Replicators (Rs) across Europe. Local Rural Heritage Hubs, gathering stakeholders and civil society, will be settled in Rs to work as living labs where heritage-led rural regeneration strategies will be co-created and implemented, while in RMs they will reinforce the ownership of CNH. Both RMs and Rs will also benefit of the RURITAGE Resources Ecosystem, a set of tools including, among others, a rural landscape mapping tool (RURITAGE Atlas) and a Replication Toolbox within an online and interoperable platform. These tools will foster knowledge building, providing evidence and supporting replication and up-scaling activities of the implemented heritage-led regeneration strategies and plans, contributing to mainstream heritage in Regional, National, European and global policies.

Forward – Unlocking the research & innovation potential of EU’s outermost regions

The project supports outermost regions in boosting their research excellence and unlocking their innovation potential, so that they can participate successfully in European R&I projects. The FORWARD project involves the regional governments of nine outermost regions (Azores, Canary islands, Guadalupe, Guyane, la Reunión, Madeira, Martinique, Mayotte, Saint-Martin), as well as the main R&I actors in each region. FORWARD will carry out an initial analysis of R&I ecosystems and based on the results, it will develop a common strategy and thematic action plans, capacity building activities and networking, as well as activities to link research and policy development. Based on a multi-stakeholder, multidisciplinary and inter-sectoral approach, the project will also support the collaboration and networking between different representatives (academia, industry, government and civil society) at regional and EU level.

UrBAN WASTE

Europe’s cities are some of the world’s greatest tourism destinations. The socio-economic impact of tourism is extraordinary in cities, but it brings at the same time a range of negative externalities, including high levels of unsustainable resource consumption and waste production. In comparison with other cities, tourist cities have to face additional challenges related to waste prevention and management due to their geographical and climatic conditions, the seasonality of tourism flow and the specificity of tourism industry and of tourists as waste producers. UrBAN-WASTE will support policy makers in answering these challenges and in developing strategies that aim at reducing the amount of municipal waste production and at further support the re-use, recycle, collection and disposal of waste in tourist cities. In doing so UrBAN-WASTE will adopt and apply the urban metabolism approach to support the switch to a circular model where waste is considered as resource and reintegrated in the urban flow. UrBAN-WASTE will perform an analysis leading to a state of art of urban metabolism in 11 pilot cities. In parallel a participatory process involving all the relevant stakeholders will be set up through a mobilization and mutual learning action plan. These inputs will be integrated in the strategies along with a review of the most innovative existing technologies and practices in the field of waste management and prevention. The strategies will then be implemented in the 11 cities and the results will be monitored and disseminated facilitating the transfer and adaptation of the project outcomes in other cases

RURALIZATION

European economic, social and territorial cohesion is threatened by the unequal development of growing urban and declining rural areas. RURALIZATION develops a novel perspective for rural areas to trigger a process of ruralisation as counterforce to urbanisation, that is, a development towards a new rural frontier offering new generations stimulating opportunities for economic and social sustainability within a rural context. These opportunities will serve both existing inhabitants of rural areas, to overcome the dilemma between place attachment and lack of economic opportunities, and rural newcomers who bring novel and innovative perspectives and relational networks to rural areas. RURALIZATION will utilise both quantitative and qualitative methods to develop innovations and to make these transferable to other contexts. Based on the call, innovations will be on facilitating rural newcomers, rural jobs, new entrants into farming and access to land for new generations. In foresight analysis rural dreams of new generations will be investigated and alternative rural futures will be designed and reflected with rural stakeholders and focus groups in terms of possibility, probability and preferability. Actions will be formulated to make positive futures reality. The outcomes of the project will result in novel options for policy makers and practical tools for rural actors.

The H2020 URBAN-WASTE project: what’s been going on lately?

The H2020 URBAN-WASTE project: what’s been going on lately?

On November 2017 the URBAN-WASTE project had gone halfway through and is soon starting its most operational phase. The project has the aim to help the transition to a circular model of waste management in urban contexts in tourist cities, throughout participatory processes and good practices experimentation. The next step is about the implementation in each of the pilot cities and regions of the eco-innovative and gender-sensitive waste prevention and management strategies developed within the project.

Up to date, three Community of Practices’ (CoP) have taken place in each pilot case, where the local municipalities and their corresponding stakeholders held critical discussions on which strategies or measures could be possible to implement and the difficulties to face, they selected several of them out of the 22 proposed and debated about the next steps forward to make it happen.
The next and last CoP will result in the public signing of Public-Private Partnerships, which will constitute a voluntary agreement including the commitments of each party involved during the implementation phase and beyond and will symbolize the commence of this phase.

Among those strategies, the WasteApp developed by the ULPGC will be implemented in all pilot cities and regions. The app is based on gamification strategy’s use to encourage good practices among tourists and local population, where rewards are offered to those carrying out practices like recycling or using tap water from fountains instead of buying non-reusable plastic bottles.

Simultaneously, every two months a meeting gathering all representatives from the pilot cases and local stakeholders have been organized in each pilot city within the project’s framework. During these meetings, capacity building activities have taken place together with Mutual Learning events, Staff Exchanges and Municipality forums. The 6th event took place in Nice, where several partner municipalities signed the Charter of Commitment for Sustainable Material Resources Management and Circular Economy. The next event will be held in Ponta Delgada at the end of March 2018.

The next steps will include following up the state of the implementation phase, analysing the results and assessing the potential replicability of these strategies into other EU cities that suffer from high touristic pressures and could benefit from better waste prevention and management practices.

Smart BEEjS

The EU has used the Strategic Energy Technology Plan to transfer power to consumers, by decentralising the energy ecosystem by establishing “100 positive energy districts by 2025 and 80% of electricity consumption to be managed by consumers in 4 out of 5 households”. The SMART-BEEjS recognises that this requires the systemic synergy of the different stakeholders, balancing attention towards technological and policy oriented drivers, citizens and society needs, providers and technology capabilities and value generation system synergies in order to deliver the transition without leaving large parts of the population behind.

Smart-BEEjS covers all angles of this eco-system, to train a generation of transformative and influential champions in policy design, techno-economic planning and business model innovation in the energy and efficiency sectors, mindful of the personal and social dimensions, as well as the nexus of interrelation between stakeholders in energy generation, efficiency and management.

2nd newsletter Sustain

In the frame of the project “Sustain your life through social entrepreneurship” participants in the second training course dedicated to “Social and Cultural entrepreneurship” had the opportunity to experience a lively reality together with a nourished group of Lithuanian, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, Romanian and Dutch energies. The training has been organized by Hogeschool Rotterdam and run from the 31st of October up to the 5th of November in Rotterdam.

“Social entrepreneurship” focuses on several aspects of daily life, Hogeschool Rotterdam gave us a good example of what Social Entrepreneurship can manage in the field of cultural development.
The working programme of this second training focused on The Canvas Business Model, a strategic management and lean start-up template for developing new or documenting existing business models; Noordman’s Social Cultural Entrepreneurship model; social entrepreneurship trends in the Netherlands; the path to develop a social business from a passion; the added value of networking in social entrepreneurship; the Delfshaven area, part of the old city managed to retain its authentic charm while growing social enterprises.
Throughout the training a constant has been the numerous study visits to the several local entrepreneurs. This was considered as a necessary experience to understand the point of view of a social entrepreneur and raise awareness on positive but also negative aspects, tricks and opportunities self created.
Last but not least, the training offered the opportunity to live an experience developed crossing several different European countries, entrepreneurial experiences, development policies. This allowed every participant to enrich its cultural baggage and gain wider awareness thus contributing to a better growth.

UPCOMING
From the 22nd of January 2017 up to the 26th of January 2017, in Cascais (Portugal), will be run the third and last training of the project. This will be dedicated to “Entrepreneurship and Initiative”.
After observing some others’ initiatives, getting the tools to develop the idea on paper, this last training will be much more practical and focus directly in the translation of ideas into action.

“CanariasCircular” event

The event “Canarias Circular” took place last Friday, 18th of November 2016 at the Parque Científico y Tecnológico de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, in the context of the OSCE days. The day focused on the concept of Circular Economy and how Canary Islands could represent the perfect example of “living lab”, where the development of this approach could be implemented at its highest in order to provide social, environmental and economic benefits for all the inhabitants.

Many organizations participated to the event, including representatives from research institutions, universities, enterprises, along with private citizens interested in knowing more about the concept and the principles of Circular Economy. The event was organized by Consulta Europa, a small agency specialized in territorial development projects and sustainable growth, that aims at implementing the idea of Circular Economy in Canary Islands through collaborative actions, joining forces with other local actors.

The event was organized in the context of the global initiative “OSCE Days”. OSCE (Open Source Circular Economy) is a digital open platform with the goal of disseminating practical ideas, solutions and tools for implementing the principals of Circular Economy. It is an international initiative and it has seen already the participation of more than 70 organizations world-wide. The Enterprise Europe Network (EEN), which is part of the Instituto Tecnológico de Canarias, has sponsored the event.

The day was divided in two distinct parts: the morning was dedicated to host an open conference on the concept of Circular Economy and to present the Circular Economy Package developed by the European Commission. During this time, some Case Studies from different part of Europe and from Canary Islands were also presented.
In the afternoon, three round tables on specific topics (construction, tourism, agriculture and aquaculture) were organized for the participants, in order to allow them to meet in closest circles for discussing and sharing opinions on their preferred subject. This moment was also a chance to explore concrete opportunities for implementing Circular Economy actions in the territory of Canary Islands, for underling barriers and possibilities, for creating a network with other people interested in the same topics and for discussing about future projects.

Together with Consulta Europa and the EEN, a number of experts on the theme of Circular economy have given their contribution to the event. Some of them participated remotely, such as María Inmaculada Rincón Liévana, the Policy Officer from the European Commission – DG ENVIRONMENT, who connected from Brussels and Laars Zimmerman, Funder of the OSCE Platform, from Berlin. Some others were able to come all the way to Canary Islands, such as Nicola Cerantola, Funder of Ecologing, from Madrid, who joined other organizations from Canary Islands like Brinergy, Ewaste, ECCA, European Circular Construction Alliance.

The badges for the event were created out of recycled paper and metal plugs from the Consulta Europa team!
Here you can find some more information about the event and pictures taken during the day.

Call for circular economy projects and good practices

Are you a practitioner in the field of circular economy? Do you want to inspire change? Do you want to inspire progress?

Across Europe, numerous activities exist relating to circular economy among SMEs, industries, universities, public authority and so on. For this reason, within the global initiative of the OSCE days, we would like to launch a call for successful initiatives, projects and examples to highlight the potential benefit deriving from circular economy practices to be presented during an event in November in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. This event will gather together several actors from Canary Islands, with the aim of creating a Living Lab for circular economy in the islands. The Archipelago can indeed represent a very stimulating and interesting situation in terms of closing the loop. Among 3 and 5 best practices will be selected and will have the occasion to present their initiatives and results in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.

Scope

Circular Economy is a new economic model that aspires to build long-term prosperity into society by decoupling economic growth from resource consumption, based on a systemic approach inspired by natural systems. It is an alternative to the current linear model, betting on a sustainable supply chain. Doing so waste will be reduced and collaboration among different partners could be enhance thanks to new business model of cooperation. In this perspective we would like to launch a call for projects related to circular economy initiatives and best practices. This calls aims at collecting both successful European/international/national projects, both private/public initiatives related to circular economy. Great attention will be given to the implementation of new business models and innovative collaboration strategies.

In particular we would like to receive best practices related to the following topics:

  • Practices related with tourism sector
  • Best practices related with and/or implemented in islands
  • Actions and projects related with water reuse
  • Circular economy practice that included a participatory approach: experience in co-creation of new business models including multi-stakeholder approach and gender dimension.

By filling this form, applicants should send an abstract of their project – between 3000 and 5000 characters- explaining the challenges, the solutions and the final outcomes of implementing circular economy in their project.

Successful applicants will be invited to Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, to present their project during the OSCE days event that will take place in November 2016 in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Accommodation and travel expenses will be covered by the organizers.

The deadline for the application is the 15th of October 2016, please send the pdf of your application to info@consulta-europa.com.
