Funding for locally led nature conservation across Europe’s overseas territories has received a fresh boost with the launch of the third BESTLIFE2030 call for proposals.
The announcement comes at a pivotal moment for the European Union’s Outermost Regions (ORs) and Overseas Countries and Territories (OCTs), as the EU reinforces its strategic commitment to environmental resilience and sustainable development across these regions.
In September 2026, the European Commission adopted a new strategy for the Outermost Regions, explicitly highlighting biodiversity protection alongside climate adaptation and environmental resilience. Meanwhile, proposed updates to the Overseas Association Decision aim to strengthen the EU–OCT partnership ahead of the 2028–2034 Multiannual Financial Framework.
Within this evolving policy environment, BESTLIFE2030 offers a practical mechanism for converting broader European biodiversity targets into concrete, community-driven results.
Building on successful approaches
The third call invites proposals that deliver clear, measurable conservation outcomes while building upon existing evidence, proven methods, and past project experience. Applicants are encouraged to scale up, adapt, or replicate successful initiatives to address pressing local ecological challenges.
Eligibility and regional structure
Funding is available to eligible organisations and partnerships planning biodiversity projects within covered ORs and OCTs.
The application process is structured into seven distinct regional calls. Applicants must ensure they select the appropriate regional call at the start of the application process, as submissions cannot be transferred between regions once initiated.
Full criteria regarding eligible entities, locations, and activities are set out in the official Guidelines for Applicants.
How to apply
Submissions are managed via the IUCN Grant Management System and can be submitted in either English or French.
The selection follows a three-stage process:
-
Eligibility check
-
Concept note submission
-
Full proposal (by invitation for shortlisted projects)
Concept notes must be submitted by 8 December 2026 at 14:00 CET. Prospective applicants are advised to review the guidance materials early to allow sufficient time for preparation.
