AquaWind’s objective is to carry out a demonstration test of an integrated multi-purpose solution in the Canary Islands. This would consist of linking an existing W2Power marine renewable energy production prototype with an innovative aquaculture solution including a custom-designed fish cage with novel grid materials, a high level of digitalisation and species diversification.
This project carries out, for the first time in the Atlantic region, test trials of integrated solutions linking marine energy production with live fish aquaculture, thus contributing to the sustainable expansion of the Blue Economy. It is important to support the expansion of this economy for outermost regions such as the Canary Islands, which are highly dependent on it. Equally, these activities must be developed in a sustainable manner, in addition to responding to climate change and preserving biodiversity. In this sense, AquaWind will achieve a practical demonstration of integrated solutions for offshore renewable energy developments, ensuring social acceptance, optimal use of resources and the lowest possible environmental impact. The project fully responds to the objectives of contributing to the European priority of the Atlantic Maritime Strategy to develop marine renewable energies and to support the development of integrated solutions between marine renewable energies and aquaculture, specifically encouraged by the European Commission in its guidelines for a more sustainable and competitive EU aquaculture for the period 2021-2030.
