Supporting Circulary Economy in the Canary Islands

Consulta Europa is part of a team group that is developing a Circular Economy Strategy for Canary Islands, which will be presented in October 2018.

An intense work schedule

On the 17th of April Canary Islands Governement presented the first draft of the Canarian Circular Economy Strategy. T
The aim of circular economy is to maintain the value of the product unaltered. In this way, waste is intercepted before crossing the interface of the system and it is reintroduced in the production cycle. This decreases pressure on the natural resources and it has multiple benefits, such as technological innovation, job opportunities and it avoids negative externalities in the long term.
The draft, prepared by Consulta Europa, will be enriched over the coming months by the contributions of different public and private actors of the archipelago as well as citizens.

The working group of Economy of the Circular of the Canary Islands has been constituted integrating the presidents of the Canarian Federation of Municipalities (FECAM), the presidents of the port authorities of Las Palmas and Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the rectors of public universities, the Committee of Experts on Climate Change, the owners of Asinca, the Employers of Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Las Palmas, the representatives of Ecoembes and Ecovidrio, and the top positions of the Ministries of Territorial Policy, Sustainability and Security; of Tourism, Culture and Sports; of Economy, Industry, Commerce and Knowledge; of the Treasury; of Agriculture, Livestock, Fishing and Water; and Public Works and Transport of the Government of the Canary Islands. This Work Commission is in charge of developing the Circular Economy Strategy that includes all the sectors that integrate and identify the objectives and priorities of the Canary Islands for the coming years.

During the month of May, Consulta Europa will organize interviews and focus groups with representatives of the different institutions partners of the working team and in June an open consultation will be opened to citizien participation and stakeholders.
The strategy will be presented in November 2018 at the Conference of Presidents of the Outermost Regions.
